first of all, Net 8 and 9 are NOT upgrades to Net 7.1. Net 7.1 has a
browser, email/news, web page maker, and a few other tools. Net 8 and
9 are browsers only.
Netscape will be coming out with a new program called Mercury. It
will be an email/news program only. When that will be coming is
anyone's guess. It could be a year from now.
Rumour also has it that Netscape might be upgrading Net 7.2. Again,
when is anyone's guess. Maybe after Net 9 and Mercury become final
releases.
Netscape 7.2 was based on a program called Mozilla Suite 1.7.2. Moz
went on to version 1.7.13, then the Moz people dropped it in favour of
the separate programs of Firefox and Thunderbird.
However, a group of developers, testers, and users, didn't want the
Suite program to die. So they formed a council and came out with a
program called SeaMonkey. SM picks up where Moz left off. SM and Net
7.x are basically the same program, and they're kissing cousins. The
only differences between Net and SM is Net includes the bonus addons
of Netscape and AOL. If you know how to use Net 7.x, then you can use
SM with no problems. There is no learning curve.
All your settings, prefs, mail, password, bookmarks, etc, are stored
in an area called the Profile. SM will pickup that profile and start
using it. You won't notice much of a change.
