You missed the rest of the scheme (I didn't mention it): those variables
are used in several batch files that are not shown - it is necessary only
to change them once for all.  At the time I wrote that package (there are
nearly a dozen variations) it was intended to use the same code on a small
partition on the boot HDD (srcdrv would then be C:) and it was necessary
to accomodate varying numbers of drives and partitions on the target
machine - the script that actually generated the boot floppy image changed
those variables as required.

I don't remember why I had to use lastdrive=z, but it had something to do
with other (IT department) scripts and programs I had no control over for
the actual ghosting - those required several high drive letters for
certain directories (R, X, Y, and Z, I think).  The ghost image space was
on machines I controlled, but I had to use the drive letters the IT
scripts required in IT space for the scripts themselves and their
interpreter.
