I fully understand what you are doing, and have used the same approach
myself, it is in effect the same thing with the one difference being
that the Object is bi-functional - both an Object and a Flag

As I grow more senile, I find it is easier on me if I use a more
verbose style and rely on Delphi's compiler warnings to alert me to
potential stupidities on my part.
