Thanks for reply.
I don't know the file format because the company "tbred" is keeping
secret.  I convert the file into ASCII by running a Business Basic
"tbred" program which will loop through the file and convert\write its
data into ASCII file.

I don't think it's possible to convert the tbred file into ASCII within
delphi, so I think the solution is to write an intelligent Delphi
application which will convert the bits of data I need.  The Delphi
application will run the same tbread program(through telnet) to convert
the needed records into ASCII.
But I need to bear in mind the following:
The file might contain so many records that it will take a long time to
covet it into ASCII.
User might not be interested in diplaying the first records of the
file, i.e he might be interested in displaying the records at the end
of file. In this instance it would be a waste of time converting the
records at the beginning of the file.

Any ideas are welcome.
