Most versions these days allow full access but I know enough about BASIC
to know how various version will act in any situation without having to
get to
the machine level.  Fully understanding BASIC entails knowing the answers
to questions like:  Is the index in a FOR-NEXT construct accessible?  Is
it
still defined after the loop is completed?  If so, what is its value? 
Does this
implementation of BASIC check for out-of-bounds array references?
Is the number of nested GOSUBs limited by memory or is there another
limit?  If there's another limit, what is it?

Questions like that are what makes for a thorough understanding of BASIC.
They don't require knowledge of machine language.
