When I programmed in BASIC, pointers were voodoo.  Then I switched to
assembly - *everything* depends on addresses (CS:CP, SS:SP, registers,
BP, etc). From that point of view, when I took up C/C++, pointers were
obvious concepts.

It didn't take me long, once I got into programming, to realize that if I
didn't understand what the language was *really* doing, and how my code
was *really* working, I had too many surprises that I couldn't understand.

All this, is, of course, essential if one aspires to the status of wizard
- it's part of the definition of "wizard".  It's also handy if one is just
a hacker level programmer (CS definition of "hacker", not the media
definition, that's the meaning of "cracker").
