If any one should ask you, it also runs just fine under ME and XP
(including 
graphics)
and in a window in Vista 32-bit (no full screen or graphics).  Of course
if
you use a virtual machine with a guest OS, you can run it just fine even 
under
64-bit Vista.  Why anyone would want to run GW-BASIC other than for 
nostalgia
is beyond me, though.  See my other reply to you for a run-down of 
FullBASIC.
You're knocking BASIC as a language when you should only be knocking the
implementations you've seen so far.  That reminds me of a pet peeve of
mine.
When I hear people say, "BASIC is slow"  it irks me.  I reply that BASIC
is 
a language.
It's neither fast nor slow.  Some implementations of BASIC may be slow but
that's not a characteristic of the language itself.  FreeBASIC generates 
pure machine
code and it's every bit (no pun intended!) as tight as a C compiler could 
emit.
If you ever find a copy, do read Back to BASIC.   It's a great account of 
how and
why BASIC was created and how various other companies corrupted the vision
the creators had for it.  (Microsoft being one of those corrupters).  The 
book is
written by John Kemeny and Tom Kurtz, the actual authors of BASIC and 
includes
some great insights as well as comparisons to other languages.
