What kind of string were you trying to format?  If you give us an example,
we
might be able to show you how you could have accomplished it without all
those
tricks.  BASIC is used very successfully every day.  Some of my BASIC
programs
are still being used to run accounting systems for some of the worlds
largest
insurance companies, for the US military's inventory systems and several
county
governments' welfare tracking systems.  VBA is used for more MS Office
apps
than any other language.  No, BASIC isn't dead nor even ailing.  It's
alive and
well in the real world (outside academia).
