Exactly, which is precisely why BBC BASIC's FOR..NEXT was specified as
it was (in 1980), for maximum compatibility with those "other well
used Basics".  It's not BBC BASIC's fault that some others haven't
managed to remain as consistent as it has, during the intervening 26
years!

As I've said before, compatibility with other BASICs isn't a major
consideration for BBC BASIC.  What is far more im****tant, for its many
satisfied users, is that it remains compatible with BBC BASIC!
