FORTRAN was famous (or possibly infamous) for it's string handling!
The FORTRAN format statement  created formatted strings which you could 
print, store in an array, recall and read (with another format 
statement) I HATED them,  I could never remember the syntax, and every 
time I needed to print something, I had to look up how to format it..


Your date problem is probably the date which mm/dd/yy is considered to 
be higher than mm/dd/19xx.
