-------------

The most im****tant section for the IBM compiler (which of course has
no ide and therefore no online lang ref...related to the OPEN (file)
keyword and all of it's options...especially in relation to options
such as ACESS/LOCK/and similar. Usually, there are a few examples of
actual usage of the more obscure combinations.

Of course, the section of the IBM manual that details the "Cannot
execute as Chld of Basic" is very im****tant to help me locate the
cause of the error.!

To put this whole deal in context (like I said I'm all upset as I
purchased ALL IBM & MS compilers, but moving after 33 years in one
plavce...well as they say SH_T happens and the stuff just
disappeared!!

Anyway, I have a really big investment in a number of large complex
programs used by customers 24/7 since the late 1980's (!). No bugs,
no problems...then 3 weeks ago issues...hmmm.

The first hint was just starting the program (on a group of new PCs)
gave an error "Cannot execute as Child of Basic". Deep in my memory-I
reaclled seeing this error years ago, but I don;t think realted to
these programs. A google/MS search turned up 1 or 2 references, but
they all related to using CHAIN or Shell commands. In my case, I used
a very simple , small program (really simply a menu) that in turn,
after the user smade a selection used the syntax "RUN PROGRAM"
command. No shells no drops to DOS, and every possible meneu
selection actually would "RUN" another program compiled by the BASIC
compiler. Whe those were done, they, in turn, would RUN the "Menu".

The programs were compiled using the option which (to keep them small
in size) used the runtime library...so to say, they were not compiled
as "stand-alone programs".

The programs have been stable and running first on DOS6x, later Win31,
W4WG's, Win85, Win 98 and since 2001 under XP pro with no problems.

The error (Child of Basic...) occurs even just as the MENU.EXE is
started before any user input...so other than placing a menu on the
screen and sitting in a loop waiting for input, no RUN/CHAIN/SHELL
....really nothing is happening...strange.

===

What have I found so far, but not yet confirmed as a source of
problems??? Well, the PCs that have this problem are new gateways and
I have just learned tonight that they have Windows (XP) media Edition
2005 not XP Pro. Maybe (?) this is the sorce of the problem...I have
to try and determine this...I'm in the process of preparing a DOS Boot
CD (Bart's etc) to see if this eliminates the problem...at least then
I'll have a better idea as to the cause...

===

The search for manuals is two fold:

a. Child of Basic Error"...

b. I also have to gather information to modify the programs (more
than 30 in total) to permit some sort of multi-user access in a peer
to peer XP network...heopefully with the data files residing on "PX
nn"...it doesn't matter if the other PC's have their own copies of the
actual programs..just so that the data files ...only have ONE single
set.... This means, I have to (best) be able to "lock records" or at
worst "lock the complete file" (these are RANDOM files.

So, I hope my LONG answer hasn't put you to sleep....and perhaps you
can now understand "which" manual pages I am interested in....both for
the IBM compiler and PDS 7x. PDS is/was a second thought, as I
thought that these might be more "modern" and up to date /easy to
locate than the IBM V2.x compilker manual.

Somehow, I imagine that someone, someplace, has the IBM V2.x manuals
sitting on a shelf and would "love" to sell, lend or even rent them
for a few days....then again...maybe I'm a dreamer.

So, that's the deal...any help you might be able to provide would be
really appreciated. As might be needed, I can provide contact info
etc as required.

Again, thanks for your feedback and heopful help.

BOB
