A splash page is, in general, not a great idea. People will usually be
coming to the site for information, location, directory, service times,
etc. They just want to get what they came for, and go. This is
especially true of return visitors. A splash page is an impediment to
what they are seeking.
Having the insides of the chapel be the background of the pages is a good
idea, with appropriate text links, etc. Just make sure that information
parishoners want is readily available.
I just go through redoing my church's website,
<http://www.hfglendale.org/>,
compared to the old website,
<http://www.hfglendale.org/index.htm>.
There is still a lot to do on
that site, bringing the homilies on line (with discussion), archiving all
the old bulletins and making them searchable, donations on line. But,
maybe this might give you some more ideas. Please note that HF Glendale
has excellent SERPs, and that traffic has tripled each month since the
new version went live at Easter.
