Any number of reasons including the user having changed some setting(s),
a conflict with extensions, a bad extension, corrupted files in the
profile etc.
If you create a new profile (or run FF in Safemode via the Firefox
program menu group option or: [drive]:\Program Files\Mozilla
Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode) and the problem is not evident, you
should start trying to figure out why. For example, run FF normally and
then disable extensions one-by-one and re-start FF in between. It's
more desirable to pinpoint the problem than simply migrate to a new
profile. You may very well cause the problem again without knowing how
or why, especially if the culprit is an extension and re-install it into
the new profile.

I'm not following you from that description. Can you provide more
detail as to exactly what you're doing?

Yes. http://edmullen.net/Mozilla/moz_profile.php
There are links there to additional resources on migrating profile info.
