Ok,

I spent another day thinking about manipulating bits, and in particular a 
TBitStream.

I think it's safe to say IA32 pretty much sucks at manipulating massive 
ammounts of bits.

It's just too slow.

For example the best routine I had could manipulate up to 16 bits 
somewhere/at some bit position in memory without disturbing the rest of
the 
bits using around 28 instructions.

Which is still a bit too much for my taste. It might work or maybe not... 
but I am not gonna risk it.

For now no bit manipulations unless absolutely necessary ;)

So the universal code compression idea goes out the window, other 
compression idea's remain valid :) since those can be byte-aligned and
such.
